Our past experiences create a story of "me". We believe the story and our belief bring in more experiences that reflect the story we hold on to. The story of "me" when examined is a bundle of thoughts and contracting/negative emotions which are triggered by the thoughts. The past is over but we are still holding on to the narrative.
