Leila, a young girl from the New Zealand countryside, is about to attend her first ball. She will be escorted by her wealthier and more experienced cousins—Meg, Laurie, Laura, and Jose Sheridan—who are surprised that Leila has never been to a ball before in this story by Katherine Mansfield.
