Never Mind Your Mind: Unhooking from Unhelpful Thoughts
Imagine a radio. It’s always on, broadcasting sounds, music, voices and static. You can’t turn it off; it’s part of the fabric of your day. This radio broadcast is a metaphor for the mind—relentlessly generating streams of words all day long. The mind does its job so efficiently, yet its broadcasts shape our entire experience of life.
Sometimes it’s helpful, guiding us toward fulfilment and achievement. Other times, it hijacks us, pulling us into spirals of unhelpful thoughts—judgement, doubt, jealousy and more.
Welcome to being human.
Why We Need to Unhook From Unhelpful Thoughts (To Not Mind Our Mind)
The human mind is an incredible tool, yet it comes with a peculiar quirk: it never stops. It judges, evaluates, analyzes, compares and contrasts—all day, every day.
We can even sometimes keep its chatter to ourselves, guarded by the fear: What if people knew what I was really thinking?
But here’s the secret: this isn’t just about you. Every human being with the capacity for language lives with a mind that operates this way.
The challenge isn’t the thoughts themselves—it’s our relationship to them. When we take our thoughts too seriously, they can dominate us. The good news? By shifting how we relate to our thoughts, we can learn to unhook from our unhelpful thoughts and find freedom and clarity.
This is the essence of this body of work called Never Mind Your Mind: learning not to take thoughts so seriously. Creating space for them to come and go. It’s about unhooking, stepping back, and acknowledging thoughts to be just what they are—thoughts.
In the Never Mind Your Mind course, you’ll explore a range of simple, practical exercises designed to help you unhook from the unhelpful thoughts that we all have from time-to-time.
The Genesis of ‘Never Mind Your Mind’
My name is Reuben, and I’m deeply passionate about this work because it has profoundly shaped my life. My journey began over 17 years ago when I read the first chapter of The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. The chapter, titled You Are Not Your Mind, lit a spark within me. At the time, I was leading the first-ever ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) group for addictions in the UK under the National Health Service. That spark has never dimmed, fueled by years of experience working with thousands of individuals both in-person and online.
Through insights, exercises and tools shared in an easy-to-understand way, I’ve witnessed remarkable shifts in the people I work with. By gently changing the way they relate to their thoughts, individuals discover a profound truth: You are not your mind.
Or as I like to say: You are not your thoughts, unless you choose them.
The Language of Liberation
When we learn to “not mind” our minds, we open the door to a new kind of freedom. The experience can be described in many ways:
- Unhooking: “I was hooked on that thought, but now I’m free.”
- Making space: “I was caught up in that thought, and now I’ve made space for it.”
- Detaching: “I am not attached to that thought; I’ve detached.”
- Stepping back: “I was looking at the world through that thought, and now I’ve stepped back.”
- Neutralizing: “That thought had power over me; now it’s neutral.”
- Defusing: “I was fused with that thought; now I’m defused.”
All these terms point to the same process: creating distance between us and our unhelpful thoughts. As we explore in the full Never Mind Your Mind course on Aura, you may find that one or two of these resonate more deeply with you. That’s perfectly fine—choose what works for you.
